Adam Greenberg was an outfielder for the ChicagoCubs of Major LeagueBaseball in 2005 and was best known for being hit in the head on the first pitch of his only plate appearance. He was one of two players in league history to be hit by a pitch in their only plate appearance without ever taking the field. However, a successful online petition drive in 2012 led to him getting signed by the Miami Marlins to a one-day contract. He had one at bat for the Marlins and struck out on three pitches. He agreed to a contract with the Baltimore Orioles for 2013

adamgreenberg1Adam, thanks for taking some time.

You were hit in the head in 2005, can you tell us the story?

In 2005 I was called up by the Chicago Cubs with Matt Murton. We flew down to Miami to join the team on the road, and it just happened to be an ESPN Sunday night game where I made my plate appearance. My family flew down and was sitting behind home plate.  I came in the 9th inning to pinch hit.

As you know it was one pitch. That first and only pitch of my career had caught me in the back of the skull right up under my helmet. My helmet flew off and I felt my head explode.

I have been working hard to get back to the big leagues and help a ball club win games.

Who influenced you growing up?

I was lucky to be surrounded by a lot of great people growing up in Connecticut.
I ended up playing a lot of baseball, soccer and basketball growing up, and when I got older, I had the opportunity to play baseball with some great people at the University of North Carolina. I have an unbelievable family and close group of friends who support me 100%.

TD_WBCHS_8194_isr_You’re a Crossfitter, how did you get into Crossfit and do you have a favorite WOD? Where’s your home box?

I have always been into Olympic weightlifting so Crossfit was a natural fit to compliment my workouts. My home box is Shoreline Crossfit in Connecticut. My favorite WOD is Fran or anything under 5 minutes.

Besides the beaning in 2005, what’s the most memorable moment in your career?

There have been so many memorable moments throughout my career. Baseball has given me so much.  I’m so thankful for my opportunity with Miami last season and this new opportunity with Baltimore.

If a player tests positive during their career should they be eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame?

I will leave that up to the Baseball writers.

Adam, thank you for taking some time. You’re an inspiration and we wish you luck this season.
