The BBWAA elected three new Hall of Famers. Jeff Bagwell (86.2), Tim Raines (86.0) and Ivan Rodriguez (76.0). The next closest were Trevor Hoffman 5 votes short (74.0), Vladimir Guerrero 15 votes short (71.7), Edgar Martinez (58.6), Roger Clemens (54.1), Barry Bonds (53.8), Mike Mussina (51.8), Curt Schilling (45.0), Lee Smith (34.2), Manny Ramirez (23.8), Larry Walker (21.9), Fred McGriff (21.7) and Jeff Kent (16.7).

Former MLB player Andy Marte and current Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura died in separate car accidents in their native Dominican Republic. Marte was 33 years old and Ventura was 25.

 

TRANSACTIONS

The Phillies have signed OF Michael Saunders to a 1 year/$9 million contract with a club option.

The Padres have signed RHP Trevor Cahill to a 1 year/$1.75 million contract.

The Blue Jays have re-signed OF Jose Bautista to a 1 year/$18 million contract with a mutual option for 2018 and a vesting option for 2019.

The D-Backs have signed OF Gregor Blanco to a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite.

The Indians and OF Brandon Guyer to a 2 year/$5 million contract extension with a club option for 2019.

The Angels and OF Kole Calhoun have agreed to a 3 year/$26 million contract extension with an option for 2020.

The Red Sox have signed INF Allen Craig to a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite. Craig was an All-Star in 2013 with the Cardinals.

The A’s have signed LHP Ross Detwiler to a minor league deal with a Spring Training invite.

The Marlins have acquired RHP Dan Straily from the Reds. The Reds will receive RHP prospects Luis Castillo, Austin Brice and OF prospect Isaiah White.

The Brewers have signed RHP Neftali Feliz to a 1 year/$5.35 million contract with incentives.

The Astros and RHP Mike Fiers agreed to a 1 year/$3.45 million deal to avoid arbitration.
