(Here is a little peak into the mind of a desperate fan, mine.)
The first couple days of every season can be deceiving for baseball fans. A team that starts off the season hot can give the impression that this is their year, even though everyone knows it isn’t. World Series contenders who come out slow are already looked at as being a bust for the season.
Last night my favorite team, the Seattle Mariners, completed an opening series sweep of the Los Angeles-Anaheim-California Angels. The starting pitching was great, the offense was producing runs all game long and as a fan I suddenly feel this strange feeling that I think can only be described as optimism.
I haven’t felt this for a while with the Mariners so I’m not 100% sure that it isn’t just something I ate yesterday.
Other teams that I picked to do big things this year are doing well. The Dodgers are 4-1, the Pirates are 2-0, and the Nationals are 2-0. So if teams I thought would do good are doing good maybe the Mariners are for real. Heck even teams I picked to do bad are doing bad, Cubs are 1-2, the Twins are 0-2, and the Phillies are 1-2.
Suddenly hope begins to grow in me as I start to realize that my Mariners could be an over .500 team this year. Heck if they keep this up, they could suddenly be the dark horse for the playoffs and even the World Series.
I’m already buying my playoff and World Series tickets in my head. I can’t afford behind the plate but heck outfield tickets to the World Series would be awesome. Then Seattle can claim to have both the Super Bowl champs and World Series Champs the same year. Seattle will rule the sports world.
They will stick it to ESPN and their East Coast bias. I see it now, the Mariners will be the new giant killer. They just need to beat the 2nd place team in the West…….
…Oh the Astros are 2-0… 2nd in the West…Only a half game out of 1st…I picked them to fight for last place in all of baseball…If they win today they will sweep the Yankees…Maybe their better than I thought…Crap I hate when reality sets in…there goes my Mariners in the World Series.
Well at least it was fun while it lasted. Go Mariners!
