Alright, round 3 of “The Coach” series. This time we are talking about the “Big Dog” coach. If you don’t know what the term “Big Dog” means, let me explain. Big Dog is a term used to describe a guy who thinks he is a boss. He thinks that his dumps smell like roses. He is the guy who puffs his chest out and puts on the “tough guy” persona. This dude also thinks his time is the most valuable thing in the world. He is the guy who thinks he is the most important guy on the field. You may not believe me, but there are tons of dudes who act this way, and yes some of them are coaches.
- “Look good, feel good, play good”
I’ll never forget the first time I heard the saying “look good, feel good, play good.” It was from a coach in high school. If you wanna play good, you gotta feel good, and if you look good, you feel good. It’s very logical in the baseball world. But this guy takes this to the MAX. He has 2 or 3 pairs of Oakley’s, has the nicest, most expensive Nike trainers, and wears bling to top it off. This guy makes sure before he leaves his house that he looks good. This guy will use terms like “swag, flare, bling, boss-man, and bra.” He likes to look good and sound good. Does this always play out well with players? No not always. But you can be sure that this guy wants his players to look good. This coach usually gets along with his players. But will be known to “big dog” his players. This means he will show them up on or off the field. This guy always has to be right and always has to win. He has to be the “big dog.”
- Demands respect
This guy will always demand respect from his players. He knows he is the coach and he wants everyone to know it too. It is never in question that this guy loves the authority he has. He likes to have a good time with his players, but he is going to be respected by everyone no matter what the situation. When this guy tells you to jump, you better ask “how high?” Because if you don’t, there will always be repercussions. This guy is serious about his players being disciplined and doing things the right way. But is known to show up his players when they don’t get the job done.
- Takes pride in the game
The “big dog” takes pride in what he does and how he looks. He takes pride in the game of baseball. The “big dog” usually talks about his playing days a lot. He’ll tell ya about the time he hit 3 bombs in his college days or when he struck out 13 guys in a complete game he threw 20 years ago. This guy will always tell “slightly exaggerated” stories about his playing days. Maybe he did strike out 13 guys but gave up 4 bombs and lost. So you always gotta take what he says with a grain of salt.
- Players don’t always like him
The biggest issue with this kind of coach is that he may have the respect of his players but they probably won’t like him. Now…this is not a bad thing. A coach isn’t there to be liked by his players. There has to be a balance of trusting and respecting your coach. But you don’t have to like him as a person or as a coach. But as a player, you should always respect your coach. However, this guy isn’t gonna be liked by everyone. He will rub people the wrong way and possibly talk too much about himself. But, this guy will get the respect from his players any way possible.
This “big dog” coach isn’t a bad dude, but he has some flaws that play out in coaching. Each one of these coaches has some good and some bad things about them. But they all should be respected by their players. That’s never easy, but it’s something players gotta do. With this guy, you just deal with the junk because he gets you wins and gets respect of his players. That’s the “big dog.”
