I should have taken Josh up on the offer to go to Eugene tonight. But, I decided to go to Volcanoes Stadium for Don Larsen night. I should have known better. I’ve lost count of how many I have been through.
For those of you who don’t know who Don Larsen is, Larsen is known for his perfect game in game 5 of the 1956 World Series. He is the only man to do so. And, he has made his career on that one feat. For the most part Larsen was an “average” pitcher. Having a career won-loss record of 81-91. Larsen pitched for 7 teams in his 15 year career.
Larsen at times can be rude. He sits on the concourse at Volcanoes Stadium signing memorabilia. Sometimes picking and choosing what to sign. His wife is always in tow selling balls and other things for people to buy to have signed. Larsen, usually sucking on a filtered cigar and a mixed drink looks old. At 83 I wonder how many more of these he has left in him.
I doubled my pleasure as it was thirsty Thursday. Coors Light was on sale for $1. Served down at the Lava Lodge at the first pitch until the bottom of the 7th inning. Working security at the stadium I hated this night. You see more problems during this promotion. But, there is always a line and it’s one of the more popular promotions during the season.
The highlight of my night was my Volcano Burger. For those who know that’s pretty sad. But, my burger was tasty and enjoyable. A “normal” Volcano burger is a half-pound beef patty, on a ciabatta bun with lettuce, tomato, bacon and special sauce. I get the “Norm special”. The girls at the Foul Line BBQ stand do a great job. Basically it has no tomato. It changes every time I get it. The girls know what I don’t like and go from there.
Ok, I lied. The highlight of my night was the 39 autographs I came home with. I got all the Spokane Indians I had with the exception of a handful of hitting coach Bobby Rose (he signed four cards).
I should have gone with Josh and Kelly. I hate Don Larson and thirsty Thursdays.
