Niki (Hayhurst) Volz had quite the softball career. If you look into the University of Utah softball records you will see Niki’s name a lot. She played for the Utes in 2000-2003. Niki Was selected to the MWC all conference team all four seasons and received all region in two seasons. Niki had a career batting average of .343 while at Utah. Niki, thanks for taking the time to chat with 9 Inning Know it All. Please tell us more about yourself.
I’m very happily married to my best friend, Jake, for almost two years now. I have two incredible ‘skids’ (that’s what I call my step kids!)
We have Sydney, our precious 3 year old Aussie/border Collie, two cats; Sinatra and Tank, three chickens and two soon-to-be guinea pigs.
I have the best parents a girl could ask for and love that we have such a close friendship.
I work as a Case Manager for Senior and Disability Services and as a supervisor part time for Mac Parks and Rec.
What was the most satisfying part of your softball career?
Being a positive role model for the young girls in the crowd!
At Utah, there was a girl who came to every home game and knew every piece of Ute softball history. Long story short, we became friends and years later she was one of my bridesmaids at our wedding!
While our Dutch team was playing playing in Russia for the European Cup, a group of girls followed us around, asking for our autographs. It was so flattering! I adore kids so I spent some extra time with them, trying to learn a few Russian words. They thought it was really cool to meet a ‘real’ American. They would braid my hair before games and cheer for our team. It was such a wonderful experience to be positive role models for those girls. I will never forget that.
Now I get to coach and I find that to be so rewarding. This game has given me so much, so it’s an honor to give back!
Softball is a sport that has so much to give. The friendships formed are so unique. It teaches so many life lessons symbolically and helps girls develop a strong sense of confidence and esteem. Plus, you get dirty and crush balls outta the park! What’s not to love?!
Growing up did you play just softball?
No! I played basketball through middle school and I played high school and club volleyball. I love volleyball, but softball is my heart. I was always out on my bike or skateboard getting dirty. I’m a total tomboy!
Who were your influences?
My parents. I know that sounds cheesy, but it’s true! I have really great parents!
Do you have a favorite coach you played for?
I can’t pick just one!
My dad-Landy Hayhurst
Jerry Orlando (Oregon Panthers softball)
and Dan Borresen (McNary Volleyball)
Is there a moment in your career that stands out the most?
How do you answer this question? There are so many that pop into my mind…..
OK, Here’s one: My last at-bat in my college career. I went up to the plate knowing that was the proverbial end. I was bawling my eyes out cause the sport that meant so much to me was ending. I didn’t pray often during softball because I never thought it was fair to ask God to give one player an edge over another. I went against my ‘rule’ this time and I prayed hard as i walked up to the plate. I was asking God to help me hit the ball cause I couldn’t see from my eyes being filled with tears. God answered that prayer : i blindly swing and crushed a triple off the right-center fence! The best part is: that was the only triple of my entire collegiate career!
You served in the Marines. How has that influenced the woman you are today?
I didn’t technically serve. I went to Officer Candidate School for 10.5 out of the 12 week training. I was diagnosed with Pneumonia and was unable to complete the training, which was very difficult to accept. I have a ton of respect and love for our beloved Corps and for all those who serve our country.
OCS taught me so many awesome skills in leadership, teamwork and hard work. It gave me a very different paradigm on the world and how I view things. Also, I can field strip an M-16 A2 service rifle faster than most girls you’ll meet!
My dad is a Marine so it’s an experience we hold together. ‘Semper Fi’ all you Devil Dogs!
Anytime I cross paths with a veteran, I shake their hand and thank them for their service to our country. They deserve it.
What advice would you give younger players?
Keep your attitude in check! You are your own worst enemy if you let your attitude block your path to your dreams.
Who was the toughest pitcher you faced?
Cat Osterman, Pitcher for Texas. We played her during her freshman year (my junior year) and our team <infamously> was her first no-hitter….for shame! It’s funny now but it was SO frustrating 11 years ago! Haha
Who was the best player you played with or against?
We played against UCLA in the Stacey Nuveman/Natasha Watley days (2002.) it was so humbling to take the field with them and to watch how fluidly they played individually and as a team.
