You will rarely ever hear this from me but I am disappointed in this years Topps Heritage set. Its not going to keep me from buying a few more packs but none the less I was a little disappointed. This years Heritage is in the 1964 design of Topps. The card is a plain design with the team name is all caps on the top of the card. A lot of the pictures on the cards are just face pics which is tough for autograph collectors and could be one of the reasons why I was disappointed.
They have the same inserts as the past few years. Then and Now, Memorable Moments, Flashbacks, New Age Performers. All the rookies cards have two players on them which I don’t like all that much. The base set is 1-424 and cards 425-500 are base High-Number Short Prints which are in 1:3 packs. Chromes come in every 1:11 packs and Refractors 1:19 packs. I found one mistake so far, Seattle Mariners Franklin Gutierrez card doesn’t have his picture on it. It is a pic of Greg Halman who was killed in November of 2011. Not sure how he ended up on the card or who checks that but, OOPS.
I bought a hobby box for $63 24 packs, 9 cards per pack, 216 cards in total. Probably another reason I was disappointed was I thought in each box you received either an autograph or game used card and I didn’t. Maybe I am wrong or just didn’t get lucky enough to pull one. I tried contacting Topps but haven’t heard anything yet. If you don’t want to buy a box, 9 card packs cost $2 and 20 card jumbo packs cost $6.
A couple of my favorite pulls from this hobby box was a Black Border Chrome Refractor Matt Cain 32/64. That type of card is a 1:368 pull so I got really lucky. I also pulled a Chrome Refractor Allen Craig. Some of my favorite inserts were a Bryce Harper Memorable Moments and a Clayton Kershaw New Age Performers. I pulled 9 of the High-Number Short Prints, Joey Votto, R.A. Dickey, Adrian Beltre, Ryan Zimmerman and a few others. Also, I got a bunch of Mariners and Dodgers which I will be getting autographed this time next year in Arizona.
I like the Topps Heritage normally because they are better for autographing. My personal opinion is that you have to have some of these cards either go on eBay and find the guys you want or just buy a few packs. Save your money though because Topps Baseball has some excellent products coming out every month for the next few months. Topps Gypsy Queen (April 2013), Bowman (May 2013), Topps Series 2 (June 2013) and Topps Allen & Ginter (July 2013).
As someone who has nearly the entire 1964 set, I can say these cards are extremely faithful to the originals. That’s why the photos are the way they are, that’s how the photos were done in the original set.
If you are going to do them like the originals I am glad they didn’t change anything up. So that’s good to hear. Thanks for the info.
