This blog is going to be a little different than usual because it is more than just baseball. October is one of my favorite months of the year. It’s not because of the weather, I live in the northwest and once it starts raining in October it won’t stop until June. It’s also not because of Halloween. My wife loves Halloween but my three favorite holidays are Opening Day for baseball, Super Bowl Sunday, and New Year’s day because of all of the college football.
I love October because for a sports fan it is a great time of the year. The MLB playoffs are in full swing. The NFL season is starting to play out who the best and worst teams are. College football is building up even more excitement as rivals begin to face each other. Best of all though is the fact that in October my Fantasy Football teams are winning. (Like I said this is more than just a baseball blog post today.)
This year I was given the privilege of joining the Oregon League of Awesome Fantasy Football League. Before I go any further let me tell you how this league magically relates to baseball. The owners of 90% of the teams in the league either work for the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, intern for the Volcanoes, or worked for minor league baseball at Volcanoes stadium. There now you see how baseball relates to the league.
Well in this league I was predicted after the draft, by Yahoo, to come in last place with only 3 wins all season. Now I sit in 2nd place and Yahoo has me predicted to win the regular season. I know it sounds like I’m bragging about my skills as a fantasy football GM. Well the reason it sounds like that is because I am. The Oregon League of Awesome is more about talking trash then winning so since I’m winning games I felt a need to talk trash. Isn’t that what sports are for?
I also emphasize my winning in the Oregon League of Awesome (I’m also in the top 3 in three other leagues) because my fantasy baseball teams struggled down the stretch. I firmly stand by the fact that I was at a disadvantage from the very beginning. My daughter was born at the end of April which hampered my ability to update my fantasy team during the second month of the season. I missed replacing injured players and as a result I only finished in the top 5 in six of my twenty teams.
Sad I know.
I plan on doing much better next year and if people are interested in putting some leagues together for Fantasy Baseball let me know. I would love to make a 9 Inning Know It All league for my readers and even a league for fellow bloggers to compete in.
