After a strong outing by Cameron Lamb, and a good showing by the Volcanoes offense the team returns to the field tonight to try and get its fourth win in a row.
Tonight will show case two starting pitchers who stand 6’6″.
For the Volcanoes Brandon Allen, one of the three 19 year old pitchers in the starter rotation, gets the start. Although Brandon is 0-5 on the season he has come on strong his last 3 starts. On July 3rd Allen faced the AquaSox and went 5 innings only allowing 1 earned run. The key for Allen tonight will be avoiding giving up walks. So far this season Allen has allowed 13 walks to only 10 strike outs. So far this season Allen has not allowed a home run and if, he can keep the ball in the strike zone and in the park the Volcanoes will have a good chance out bumping that win streak up to 5.
The AquaSox counter with their own 6’6″ pitcher in Stephen Kolscheen. In his last outing Kolscheen was ruffed up for 6 earned runs in 4.2 innings against the Spokane Indians. That, however, has beenthe only real blip for Kolscheen this season. He has struck out 16 while only giving up 8 walks. The Volcanoes will need to get the bat off of the shoulder if they hope to score runs tonight.
Keys for the game:
– Plate discipline is going to be important tonight. Kolscheen doesn’t walk a lot of players so the Volcanoes need to avoid the offspeed pitches and jump on the fastballs.
– Make the routine plays. Most of the errors this season have been from guys just rushing the routine plays. The Volcanoes need to stay focused all the way through the play.
– Score early. When the team scores early on it loosens the team up and allows them to play with confidence.
