Opening day felt so good. I love spring training but watching major league baseball that actually counts just seems so much more fulfilling. Having watched a few highlights and the games that I got to sit down and watch I realized a few things.

opening dayThe first thing I learned is that I want to change my NL Rookie of the Year choice to Trevor Story. I know Seager will be good this year but Story comes out on Opening Day, in his major league debut and bashes two home runs. Lets be honest, the Rockies probably are not going to be very good this year but just maybe they will have a little hope for the future with some of their young players demonstrating what they have. Or they could just all bomb the rest of the season, I don’t know.

Only Felix Hernandez and the Seattle Mariners can lose a game 3-2 and only allow ONE hit. I hope the errors that cost the team those 3 runs were just a opening day thing because if this season goes this way the entire year I’m going to struggle this summer. Now I know Seager is a Gold Glove 3rd baseman and Marte was probably a little nervous but it hurts to lose a game like this.

Clayton Kershaw is a perfect example of a competitor. Not only does he do a great job on the mound but if you watch his at bats and his running on the base paths it is clear that he wants to win and he will do whatever it takes. He was running to first at full speed on a little dribbler. Slashes a nice single to center. Made a great read on a throw home to advance from 2nd to 3rd and then tagged up the next batter to score. Oh and by the way at this point the game was well in the Dodgers corner. He plays hard and it is clear why he is regarded as one of the best in the game.

The Braves and Phillies lost on the same day. This might be something you see far more often then you don’t see. The only time either of these two teams will be favored to win a game is win they face each other, but then does anyone really win in that matchup? Tough situation for fans of both of these historic franchises.

Oh and by the way my pick for NL MVP hit another Opening Day homerun. I think Bryce Harper likes to start the season with a homerun just to remind all opposing pitchers that he is ready for the season.

The main thing I realized is that baseball is officially back and I don’t have to pretend to like football or basketball anymore to pass the time. Thank goodness.
