Well game one of the World Series is in the books and my pick the Kansas City Royals have taken a 1-0 lead over the New York Mets. Winning the first game doesn’t mean the Royals have won the World Series but it is a good start. Regardless of who won last nights game one thing is very clear, this may be one of the best match ups that we have seen in the World Series.

This game was full of clutch plays, crazy plays, a little bit of what the… and a whole lot of excitement.

So like every good World Series there had to be some complications. Rain before the game, check. Technical difficulties, check. Shameless plugs for the NFL by an announcer that 99% of baseball fans can’t stand to listen to, double check.

Before getting into what happened in the game I do want to say how sad I was to hear that Edison Volquez lost his father and found out about it before the game and then went out and pitched.  There is never a good time to find out a loved one passed away but right before game one of the World Series can make things even harder as you are both excited and saddened at the same time.

WSBLOG11-superJumboWith that being said lets talk a little about the actual game. You know if I was going to write up a script of how every World Series should go it would have to have an inside the park homerun on a ball that should have been caught. Alcides Escobar took what should have been a first pitch out and turned it into one of the most exciting plays in all of baseball. Well maybe that was the Mets outfield that did that but either way Escobar was on his horse and put the first run on the board with emphasis.

The next few innings seemed to be pretty normal. The Mets put up runs in three consecutive innings, the Royals scored a couple more to tie the game and then the crazy kicked in again.  A miss played ground ball to the first baseman allows the Mets to score a go ahead run. Seems almost like Deja Vu and certainly meant that destiny was going to be on the Mets side.

Alex Gordon didn’t seem to want to go along with destiny and with one very large swing of the bat Gordon took what looked like a game 1 loss for the Royals and breathed new life and excitement into the team and the fans as he hit a bottom of the ninth, one out, solo homerun to tie the game at 4-4.

Scoring a run can make fans excited but hitting a clutch homerun in the 9th inning of a World Series game can make an entire city stand and cheer.

The Royals and Mets would go on to battle into the 14th inning where the Royals ended the game on an Eric Hosmer redemptive sac fly.

Although the team I picked to win pulled out game one I can honestly say that I feel like this World Series is going to be a nail biter and will probably go 7 games. At least that is what I’m hoping for.
